Directed, not generated: our one rule for AI

Everfelt makes commercials with AI in the pipeline and a human in charge of every frame. The machine is the loom, never the tailor. That is our one rule, and it exists because the difference between a film and content is not the tool that made it. It is whether anyone with taste said no along the way.

What does "directed" mean when AI does the rendering?

Everything that mattered before still matters. A director decides what the story is, where the camera lives, what gets cut, what the ending withholds, and what the whole thing is supposed to make you feel. AI changed how fast we can build a shot. It did not change who decides whether the shot deserves to exist. On our productions, no frame ships because the model produced it. Frames ship because a person chose them.

Why have a rule at all?

Because the failure mode of AI video is not ugliness. It is averageness. A model trained on everything produces the average of everything, and the average of everything is content: technically fine, emotionally empty, instantly forgettable. The industry data backs this up. Adoption of AI video is near universal among ad buyers, yet marketer satisfaction with video ROI dropped as volume exploded. The bottleneck moved. It is no longer production. It is judgment.

What does the rule change in practice?

We write before we generate. Every film starts as a story on paper with a beginning, a turn, and an ending, and the model is briefed like a crew, not prompted like a slot machine. We say no constantly. Most of what any model produces does not clear the bar, and the discipline is in the discard pile. And we end every project by measuring honestly, telling the client what performed and what did not, because taste without feedback turns into vanity.

Is this anti-AI?

The opposite. We built the studio on AI because it collapses the distance between a good idea and a finished film. A director with these tools can do what took a crew and a quarter. But speed only matters if the thing you make quickly is worth watching twice. Directed, not generated is not a caveat about AI. It is the reason AI is worth using.

Questions

Does Everfelt use AI to make its commercials?

Yes, throughout production. The rule is that AI builds and humans direct: story, taste, and the final cut are always a person's call.

Why do AI-only ads so often feel off?

Models optimize toward the average of their training data. Without a director making choices, the result is technically competent and emotionally flat. Direction is the quality control.
